These ladies mean so much to me! I’m so grateful to have had them on my team with both my babies, and to have even been caught by one of them myself as I entered the world. They were with me throughout my pregnancy with my firstborn, up to the transition of planning a home birth to a hospital induction, and praying with me and supporting me when the decision for a Cesarean was made. Then with my second, they wanted that HBAC as much as I did, and worked extremely hard with me to make that happen safely and beautifully in Tennessee. Alabama and Tennessee cannot possibly deserve these amazing women, but I’m so glad we have them!

A Family Tradition
Midwifery, for the Nelson Family, is a FAMILY TRADITION! "Why?" you ask. Well, after having my first 2 sons in a hospital the "normal way," and not liking feeling like a number rather than a scared young lady needing encouragement and needing to be involved in my own birthing, my husband and I were introduced to midwifery by a midwife attending our church. She was so kind, and told us about her own babies deliveries in the privacy of her home. We were impressed and decided that our next child would be born in this way. And the rest is history! Our third son was born healthy and safe in his own home. Then we moved to Alabama, and when I got pregnant again I knew I had to find a new midwife. Karen Brock was who the Lord directed me to. I remember asking her, in our first meeting, why she became a midwife. She responded, "Well, someone asked me to catch her baby!" By the time I met her she had already delivered hundreds of babies, along with the Daren Bader, and Wetawnya Smith. These three sweet ladies were so encouraging, knowledgeable, and professional when they lovingly aided me in delivering my first daughter (our fourth child). I will never forget Karen arriving at my house on that Sunday morning with a big smile on her face saying, "What a beautiful day to have a baby!" I knew then all would be well with this delivery. Approximately three and a half years later, Karen and Wetawnya aided me again when I delivered my last child, Sarah, and although there was a small complication, these two sweet, ladies handled it without me even knowing anything was amiss, and instructed me in how to heal properly after. I can't say enough about these ladies. They are not just very educated in this wonderful profession, but they are (I believe) gifted to be midwives, and have become very dear friends to me. And that's just the first chapter of our story! Now Jim and I have SIXTEEN grandchildren (three we were blessed to gain when our Sarah married a man with three boys already) and THIRTEEN-6 boys and 7 girls-born with the loving aid of Karen and Wetawnya along with others who have come along and trained with them through the years. Now, after FIFTEEN births with Karen and Wetawnya's assistance, they are more like family than friends, and my children and I actually miss seeing them when someone in the family is not pregnant! And the TRADITION continues...I definitely see in the future more such gifts from God will be added to our family with these precious midwives overseeing the miracle!

“Highly recommend these wonderful ladies!! Four weeks ago I was able to get the beautiful and peaceful home birth I hoped for. They were wonderful during my pregnancy and took time to spend with my family and I and answered any and all questions I had. When it came to me to deliver they were at my house quickly and made sure I was comfortable and were encouraging which helped me feel confident. They are very knowledgeable and took such good care of my new baby and myself. My older kids really enjoyed watching the newborn tests and weight of the baby and the midwives answered all of the questions they had. It was truly a wonderful experience that I hope every women gets to have. Thank you again ladies for taking such good care of us!”

Every year on her birthday I think about you. She turned 18 today and is a senior in high school. I just wanted to share one of her senior pictures. I hope you and your family are all doing well. Karen and her amazing team brought our sweet Emmie Joy into the world in 2019. I was so excited to be blessed with a Home birth in our North Alabama home. It was a fairly normal labor but as soon as our daughter was born, I had to be transported to the hospital for extra after care. Karen never left my side. It meant so much to me to know I was in wonderful and caring hands.

What an incredible experience and pleasure to work with you all! From the level care, expertise, and personal touch of our well visits and the ease of our delivery (perhaps that is best spoke on by my wife.. after delivering a 10lb baby boy in 4 hours), and the continued connection and follow up in days and weeks ahead.
